Closer to You

Bunny looked so good in blue that I got to wondering if he wouldn't look nice shaded in other colors. Like most first children he's getting a lot of time in front of the camera. By the time I make it to a second or third foal there probably wont be enough pictures to tell that they ever were anything other than full grown adult horses The title comes from Get Closer by Seals and Croft. Reference was used for the clouds.

The foaling pastures, or the Nursery as it was known locally, were some of the best land on property. Nearly flat with nothing more challenging than a trickle of a creek cutting through, they offered a clear view of everything from fence to fence right out until the wooded hills beyond that marked the back most fields. When they were occupied there was someone out there twice daily to check on the mares and interact with the babies, keeping them from going feral during their time spent just being kids.

Sometimes visits were more frequent, it was a nice place to be and far enough out of sight of the barns that you were guaranteed to enjoy all of your break before you could be hunted down to fill in on extra tasks. Thirty minutes away from a job where you could be yanked up at all hours of the night to do this forgotten something, or that important whatever that couldn't wait until morning (even if it could) wasn't such a horrible thing to ask. It wasn't unusual for the person assigned to foal duty to come out and find they they had been beaten there. Kind of like today when Kate had discovered a pair of grooms hunkered down in the tall grass next to the herd taking in the late summer air.

She had sat down with them for a while for a chat, but now they were gone, back to their duties, and she was reluctant to stir after warming up under the sun that was playing peek-a-boo in the clouds. With a comfortable heavy feeling she had fallen back on her elbows and looked over the pasture searching it for the inspiration to get up and hike her way over to the knot of mares and foals that had drifted several meters off. Just when she thought she was getting close to finding that inspiration she felt a touch on her head and for one irrational moment she feared she was in trouble for slacking off even the tiniest bit.

Kate looked up wide eyed and sure she was caught, and got a foal to the face. The whiskery muzzle had landed with hard gums across her nose as her hair was jerked away from it. Bunny didn't mind that she had messed up his surprise attack grooming, a tuck of the head and he was back to rasping away at the red locks with his little pink tongue out and eyes closed in concentration. She sat there bemused at the treatment right up until he caught a chunk of hair and accidentally on purpose pulled it.

"Stop it you little booger." She tried waving him off, but ended up having to stand to get her still smarting head far enough away from Bunny to stop him from coming back again. Alright, inspiration had found her. She was up and he could go away now.
