The final traces of her last slide fell back to earth in the form of a softly wafting dust trail. They had completed the reining pattern with calm confidence and balance attesting to the long stint of workouts leading up to this. The Man's rein hand relaxed over her whithers prompting her to settle and wait in the center until they were picked back up for another command.

At the end of the arena a panel swung out followed seconds later by a good sized steer shooting out in the haphazard manner of confusion. Tiny ears perked in interest, the ocher colored body tensing and leaning forward, contemplating moving off on her own initiative. Before it came to that The Man cued her with pressure and she went to meet the side of beef.

When she caught it she used her body to block an escape into the center, moving it back and forth along the short side of the fence. As they got their fill of that The Man checked her to give the cow time to move off, instead coming up behind it forcing it completely onto the fence where she flanked it as it made it's first run down the long side of the arena. As they approached the end she made her move, pulling ahead of the cow and turning into it in a thick cascade of dirt. The steer's head jerked to the side to avoid colliding with the mare's side. Urgently it scrambled around and took off again attempting to get away. Again she chased it, pacing herself just back of it, shoulder even with it's hip. They wheeled and dug into another turn tacking straight for a few strides before she released and let the hamburger book it into the middle for the circling. She had heard you could win this with a good performance on the fence and she planned to prove it.

Working Cow Horse includes three portions; reining, herd work (cutting), and fence work. Fence work includes working the cow on the short side of the arena then running it down the long side and turning it twice, then move it out into the center and circle it both left and right. In Cricket's case the fence work starts right after the reining pattern while the horse is still in the arena.
