Stained Glass Peaks

It had started with the maiden races. Always a hard day for the bettors, the ranch's prospects had done favorably and there were no real complaints with the performances they had gotten from them. On the fourth day they had pulled the training wheels off their newest filly and turned her loose with equally good results.

By the last day everyone working behind the curtains of Twin Peaks Ranch was confident in the sort of race they would see that evening. They knew the field and their racing styles as had been demonstrated in the under card races. Even if this wasn't Blondie's best distance the general consensus was that she had this one bagged.

She wouldn't have the extra distance to run her normal slow runaway race. What she lacked for in speed she made up in aces with stamina, proving herself in her ability to bounce back into condition. But the question was whether that was enough of an advantage over the rest of the field, many of whom had also raced earlier in the week. A lot was riding on whether or not her jockey could keep time well enough to push her through a good set of fractions that they would need to set up in the best position for the stretch battle she was likely to get in with the faster classics trained horses.

The gates flew open over the dusty track letting slip the snorting line of horses. Blondie made her way out between her two neighbors and in a handful of strides had her head and shoulders clear of them. Her nose was turned in, hunting the finish line as the heavy Oklahoma sun raced to beat her to the horizon.
