The Gloves Come Off

By the predawn light it was plain to see that there would be trouble in the near future. Unlike the other horses limbering up Alsike did not have an easy way of going. He bit and clawed the air as if it had done him a personal injury as he circled at the end of the lunge line.

It was far from being a perfect circle as he drifted in and out. His staggered path bore closer resemblance to a planetary orbit than anything even vaguely round. He was testing, constantly testing. And each time he was driven back with maybe a bit too much gusto. Neither one of them was playing around.

When their number came up he was dragged both kicking and screaming the most interesting insults heard that day. It was still very early in the inspection, but he had set a decently lofty bar for other wayward mounts to reach for.
